Susan’s images focus on cityscapes, and in this exhibit she captures some of the most historic and recognizable commercial signs in the Boston metropolitan area. From the Hilltop Steak House’s giant neon cactus to the marquee of the Paramount Theater, Susan’s photographs demonstrate the grandeur and garishness of twentieth century commercial advertising. Originally designed to attract customers and sell products, most of these signs can now be appreciated as pieces of public art. They often serve as local landmarks, as well, creating a sense of place and neighborhood identity. Susan is especially drawn to photographing and preserving images of threatened signs like the Circle Cinema rooftop sign in Cleveland Circle.
