2023 Highlights
2022 Accomplishments
2022 marks the 10-year anniversary of UVA. As the pandemic calms down, we were back on track with putting out in-person exhibitions at our new gallery at the Arthaus. This year we hosted 5 in-person exhibits, 3 virtual exhibits, and 1 holiday market, which featured 80+ local artists and engaged 1000+ art lovers across states and continents.
The theme of our exhibitions stretches across long-standing topics like climate change and mental health awareness, as well as timely matters such as coping with COVID-19. Our exhibitions were well-received by both our audiences and the press, as we received news coverage from Boston Globe on the Invisible Disability exhibition.
On September 1st, we had the honor to spend a lovely afternoon with Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley during Maria Termini’s solo exhibitionA Retrospective: Impetuous Joy and Extravagant Color.
We also co-sponsored three events raising funds and engaging communities with other local nonprofit organizations.
2021 Accomplishments
2021 was a year of landmark accomplishments for UVA. In May, the Board of Directors adopted a new mission statement: Unbound Visual Arts (UVA) is a unique Allston-Brighton based non-profit art organization. We serve the Greater Boston community with impactful educational programs and exhibits to encourage learning, engagement, and change. (approved by the Board of Directors May 6, 2021)
With unbound excitement, UVA celebrated the grand opening of our new gallery at the Arthaus, located at 43 North Beacon Street in Allston, MA. The festive grand opening ceremony in December drew over 60 attendees, who enjoyed artwork by over 40 UVA members. Dedicated to showcasing work by local artists, the gallery is Allston’s first community art gallery. Other exciting events at the Arthaus included the Art Expo & Sale and UVA’s first Holiday Sale. UVA also continued to create virtual exhibition opportunities for our community of artists and art enthusiasts. We organized and presented seven virtual exhibits in 2021 with accompanying virtual programming, each uniquely timely and compelling, and represented work by over 50 artists. All of the dynamic 360-degree virtual galleries remain accessible on UVA’s website.The exhibits include: A Light I Knew Well (January 19-March 31); Stronger Sisterhood: Representing Intersectional Identity (January 29-April 30); Self-Preservation: A Complex Human Instinct (April 19-June 30); common art: Fruit of the Spirit Exhibit (June 23-August 31); and Stasis and Comfort: The Art of Chelsea White and Kyung Eun Lee (July 26-September 30). Our current exhibits are Teaching Children About Racial Justice (October 7, 2021-January 14, 2022) and Invisible Disabilities (October 15, 2021-January 14, 2022). Over the summer, UVA co-sponsored seven election events for the Allston Brighton Candidate Series for Mayoral, At-Large and District 9 City Council Races. 2020 Accomplishments
In 2020, UVA held its 8th annual Mardi Gras Celebration and Art Sale at the Stockyard Restaurant before making the transition to virtual programming. Four virtual exhibitions were unveiled over the course of the year: WELLNESS: Art for Physical and Emotional Healing, which featured 13 artists; New Narratives: Reclaiming Asian Identity Through Story, which featured 25 artists; Portraits in Refuge, which featured 15 artists; and Momentary Spaces, whichfeatured 4 artists. Each of these exhibitions included at least one virtual program designed to explore the guiding theme and introduce the creative minds behind the artwork. To offset the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and continue bringing artistic initiatives to the public, UVA received grants from the Boston Cultural Council, the Boston Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture, and the Charlesview Inc. COVID-19 Emergency Fund. UVA maintains its commitment to developing a diverse and equitable community that uplifts the work of all artists. Find the organization’s 2020 diversity statistics here. 2019 Accomplishments
In 2019, UVA organized four major art events: two major exhibitions involving 44 artists – Peace in Her Time and The Waste Land on Earth?; the annual Mardi Gras & Carnival Celebration of the Arts at the Green Briar; and the 3rd Unbound Visual Arts Expo and City Heart Show at the Prudential Center involving 50 artists. Grants were received by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Boston Cultural Council, the Brookline Commission for the Arts, the Berkshire Bank, and Harvard University. 2018 Accomplishments
In 2018, UVA organized six major art events: three major exhibitions involving 48 artists – Battle of the Sexes, the Leslie Alumnae Exhibition, and Wellness; the annual Mardi Gras & Carnival Celebration of the Arts at the Green Briar; the Art Expo and City Heart Show at the Prudential Center involving 95 artists; and the Brighton Art Expo at the 1st AllBright Art Crawl with Brighton Main Streets, Allston Village Main Streets, and Allston Open Art Studios. During the year, financial grants were received from the Boston Cultural Council, the Brookline Council for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Berkshire Bank, and the Boston College Community Fund.
